How Many BTU Do You Need in Cold Weather?
A tankless RV water heater's BTU rating is not a vanity number in winter — it is the difference between a 49 °C shower and a lukewarm trickle. The colder your inlet water, the more heat you must add to reach a comfortable shower temperature, and that heat is fixed by the burner's BTU. The same heater that feels ample at a 20 °C campsite can fall short when the inlet drops to 4 °C.
The Physics
Required power = flow × 4.186 × temperature rise (kW = L/min ÷ 60 × 4.186 × ΔT). At a 25 K rise and 12 L/min that is 20.9 kW. But winter is not a 25 K rise. Inlet 4 °C to a 49 °C shower is a 45 K rise; at 12 L/min that demands about 37.7 kW — above any single RV burner. In reality the burner is fixed, so flow must fall as the inlet drops. An 80,000 BTU (≈23.4 kW) unit at a 45 K rise sustains about 7.5 L/min; a 65,000 BTU (≈19.0 kW) unit sustains about 6.0 L/min. Both still shower — the larger burner simply holds more flow and recovers faster between users.
Engineering
SEFFY's two drop-in models share the 15×15 inch cutout and the 32–52 °C set range: the CZ-TGZ at 80,000 BTU (≈23.4 kW) and the CZ-B at 65,000 BTU (≈19.0 kW). Both tolerate 0.01–0.8 MPa (CZ-TGZ) / 0.02–0.8 MPa water pressure and carry lead-free stainless steel heat exchangers. The CZ-TGZ's extra headroom matters most for cold-climate, full-timing rigs with back-to-back morning showers.
Comparison (Same Product Line Only)
| CZ-TGZ (flagship) | CZ-B (standard) | |
|---|---|---|
| Heat input | 80,000 BTU ≈ 23.4 kW | 65,000 BTU ≈ 19.0 kW |
| Hot water @ Δt=25K | up to 12 L/min | up to 12 L/min |
| Heat exchanger | lead-free stainless steel | lead-free stainless steel |
| Best for | cold-climate, high-demand | mild-climate, lighter load |
| Net weight | 12 kg | 11.8 kg |
Practical Pitfalls
- Bigger BTU is not automatically "better" in mild weather — the CZ-B is enough and marginally lighter.
- Match BTU to your coldest expected inlet, not your home's.
- Both rely on the documented auto-drain procedure before freezing; it protects the unit but is not a substitute for following it (No-Winterize Freedom).
- These are exterior wall-mounted, outdoor-vented RV appliances — not portable, never used in tents or cabins.
- SEFFY RV heaters are built to international gas-safety standards; EU CE certification is in active preparation, expected soon.
